Arab Bank Australia Limited Supports Westmead Millennium Institute and The Millennium Foundation Print E-mail

Arab Bank Australia has had a long involvement with Westmead Millennium Institute and its main fundraising body, The Millennium Foundation.

Arab Bank Australia is classified as a proud corporate benefactor and is very proud to support the Millennium Foundation to achieve its mission of supporting lifesaving medical research and patient care at Westmead Hospital.

Since 1995 Arab Bank Australia has donated over $300,000, these funds have been used to:

  • Sponsor the 'Flow Cytometry' Laboratory. This laboratory houses the 'Flow Cytometry' machine – a powerful piece of equipment that analyses multiple physical and chemical characteristics of cells. This allows identification of mutations in cells and therefore to the diagnosis of diseases such as Leukaemia. The unit provides service to Westmead Millennium Institute, Westmead Hospital, Children's Medical Research Institute and The Children's Hospital at Westmead.
  • Assist The Millennium Foundation to support the areas of medical research that need critical funding in the following research areas:
    • Cancer
    • Neuroscience and Vision
    • Infection and immunity
    • Liver and metabolic
    • Cardio-respiratory

Our Managing Director, James Wakim, has been a director of The Millennium Foundation since 2000 and served as President from May 2000 to October 2005. In The Millennium Foundation's Annual Report 2008 titled "It's all about people." James was asked why he is involved in the capacity as a board member:

I am driven and extremely passionate about supporting lifesaving research because of my upbringing. My parents have always taught us to focus on building a reputation that is based on positive contributions to the community for the benefit of all.

Furthermore, I have raised my own children with the same values and lead by example. As a strong believer in continuously putting back into our community I do this by contributing my time, money and effort. My involvement in The Millennium Foundation has helped me achieve this life long goal.

It is a bit like the cleansing of the soul and gives me the balance necessary in a busy life to appreciate that in reality what people remember us for most is our deeds and goodwill that we do unto others. In the words of William Shakespeare 'Out, out, brief candle! Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage and then is heard no more'.

In my capacity as Managing Director of Arab Bank Australia I am fortunate that I and my team can contribute. Our effort in this regard actually units us as One Team and together we work for the benefit of our community.
